Smartphones laid out
How large would be all the phones layed out be?

Our everyday lives are shaped by smartphones in every way. If you live in Europe or the US, depending on your age and when you got your first smartphone, you change your phone every 2-5 years on average. This not only creates a huge mountain of harmful waste, but is also completely avoidable. To be more precise, just under 1.3 billion cell phones are sold each year. If we assume that a standard smartphone with sides measuring 16 cm and 8 cm has a surface area of approximately 0.013 m², for our experiment we want to show how large the annual sales of smartphones alone are. Since there are just under 1.3 billion, the total size is approximately 16.9 million m². This converts to about 2,400 soccer fields or roughly the size of Amsterdam's city center.
